Designing Quilts

Greetings Gang,
I can't believe it's Friday all ready! Where the hell did the week go? Today, I thought I'd give you all a birds eye view of how I design a new quilt. The drawings and figures above are for a new pattern that I'm working on. It will be written in baby, large throw and Queen size. I'll be piecing it in the large throw size, using the fabrics pictured below. Though this quilt is too complex to be a part of my new "Big Easy" series, it too is designed to show off yummy fabric. I fell in love with the Japanese inspired group of prints in funky, "Wasabi" shades of yellow paired with deep intense blackened violet - what a pair!
The quilt is made from one large, 16" block which is made up of smaller blocks/units of various sizes. I will turn the large blocks in various directions when sewing the blocks together so that sometimes the rectangular section will be tall and somtimes, long. The drawing above is as far as I'll go in pre-preparation. The figures on the left hand side are the cutting instructions. The block is made from strips cut in just three widths, 1 1/2", 2" and 2 1/2" so the cutting is really easy. I cut all of the units for the whole 64" x 80" throw in just under two hours.
