Entry for February 15, 2008

Happy Friday Everyone!
Here is one of the newest books we've added to our wonderful selection of titles here at Wild Heather Quilts.
It's called Fusing Fabric, but it's the subtitle that gives a better idea of the true subject of the book, "Creative cutting, bonding and mark making with the soldering iron". The book isn't about fusing in the traditional sense, using Wonder Under" or some other type of iron on fusible, rather, it's about using meltable fabrics such as polyester organza and craft felt and a soldering iron or Creative Textile tool to bond and cut the fabrics.
The book is not for design beginners. It's more for those who are looking for new techniques to suplement their artistic skill set. This is a great technique for just about any fiber artist. The gist of the technique is layering multiple, transparent fabrics such nylon organza, chiffon, synthetic net or lace, polyester sheers, lame and other glitzy fabrics onto a base of acrylic felt (no wool felt). Then the layers are melted together and shapes and lines are added using the tip of a very hot soldering iron.
The book is very careful to give instructions for using the proper tools while doing these techniques including using a resperator (face mask). Some of these fabrics can be quite caustic when melted. There are sections on learning basic skills as wll as sections on making particular projects such as books, wall art, appliques and 3-D forms. At a mere $19.95, this colorfilled book is a bargin!
