There are literally thousands of books out there marketed to quilted stores.  One of my responsibilities here at the store is to fill our shelves with the "Best of the Best" books.  I decided when we bought the store that I would concentrate on carrying books that taught technique rather than "make this particular quilt".

Though we carry several very good books on Landscape techniques, I think this one is probably the best.  It includes very simple techniques including turned edge applique.  Everything is free form cut, without the use of drawing the design to scale or using templates.  The techniques are designed not only for ease of use but also as time savers.  The average sewer can use these techniques to complete a small wall quilt (12" x 18") in just a few hours time.

The author, Karen Eckmeier, has included lots of helpful information of design layout, color schemes, great ways to jump in and begin and how to add simple embellishments to add extra interest to your work.  For absolute beginners and beyond.
