You can choose to cut the stamp free style, without drawing the design onto the stamp blank or you can draw the design directly onto the stamp or you can draw it on a piece of paper then transfer it to the stamp. 



When I want a design with sections that have straight lines and equal spacing, I draw the design on paper first.  Begin by drawing the outside edges of the stamp.  If the stamp is 3 1/2" sqaure then draw a 3 1/2" square.  Use a regular or mechanical pencil. 



Next, draw the design.  Press firmly with the pencil and try to get a good, fine line.
